This course is for nurses caring for patients with or at risk of stroke in practice or in the community
- An estimated 150,000 people have a stroke in the UK each year
- There are over 67,000 deaths due to stroke each year in the UK
- Stroke is the third most common cause of death in England and Wales, after heart disease and cancer
- Stroke accounts for 9% of all deaths in men and 13% of deaths in women in the UK
- Stroke has a greater disability impact that any other chronic disease, Over 300,000 people are living with moderate the severe disabilities as a result of stroke.
Studying Education for Health’s Stroke module will enable you to recognise the early warning signs of stroke and will enable you to effectively manage and potential prevent the condition.
This module will cover the following areas:
- Primary prevention
- Early warning signs
- Pathophysiology
- Stroke, transient ischaemic attack and subarachnoid haemorrhage
- Urgent acute management
- Secondary care (explaining the patient’s journey)
- Long term management
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of primary prevention in the reduction of stroke related morbidity and mortality
- Explain the pathophysiology of stroke
- Analyse the benefits of early recognition and urgent acute management of stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA)
- Understand the role of secondary care in ongoing stroke management
- Analyse the role of shared care/self management
- Evaluate the importance of ongoing rehabilitation and secondary prevention
- Discuss management strategies in relation to national guidelines
- Evaluate the impact of research in improving patient care
- Critically reflect on the evidence available
This course will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials, supported by 1 study day and 1 assessment day.
