This module aims to equip health professionals with the ability to screen, identify and manage patients with hypertension. Successful students will be able to determine their practice to provide a systematic approach to evidence based patient care.
Outline Content
- Epidemiology of hypertension to include ethnic considerations
- Pathophysiology of hypertension
- Identification of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors
- Measuring blood pressure
- Screening, diagnosis and long term management of hypertensive patients to include 'whitecoat' hypertension
- Investigations (eg biochemical markers, urine testing, ECG's)
- Non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment to include side effects and dose titration
- Recognition of secondary hypertension
- Patient empowerment and concordance
- National and local policy guidelines
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Discuss the impact of hypertension with particular reference to epidemiology data
- Examine the causes of poor blood pressure control
- Discuss ways of identifying those at risk of hypertension and evaluate the significance of screening, detection and management of hypertension in reducing co-morbidity and mortality
- Evaluate the various methods of measuring blood pressure, taking into account the practical implications
- Discuss appropriate ways of empowering and supporting patients and other healthcare colleagues on the principal aspects of the various non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments available for managing hypertension
- Evaluate and apply relevant current guidelines, protocols and quality indicators relating to managing hypertension and organising care, in a clinical setting
