Diabetes and the metabolic syndrome impose an enormous burden on the individual and on the healthcare system. The metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased risk of both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This module enables practice nurses and other health professionals to develop a sound knowledge base in the prevention and up to date management of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Sound knowledge is underpinned by essential practical skills, equipping candidates to participate effectively in the care of these patients.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of diabetes
  • Evaluate strategies for the prevention of diabetes
  • Outline the differences between Type I and Type II diabetes
  • Examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to diabetes management
  • Discuss the role of the healthcare professional in the prevention of complications
  • Discuss the role and implementation of supported self care
  • Analyse the implications for practice of diabetes as a cardiovascular disease
