Studying the Diabetes as a Cardiovascular Disease module will enable you to understand the link between metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease and recognise your role in preventing and treating these conditions.
This module covers the following areas:
- Epidemiology of diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- Pathophysiology
- Treatment and management: Pharmacological and non-pharmacological
- Managing increased risk via lifestyle and pharmacological intervention
- National and local policy guidelines
- Application of evidence based practice
- Organisation of care
- Targeting, prioritising and prevention strategies
- Supported self care
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of diabetes
- Evaluate strategies for the prevention of diabetes
- Outline the differences between Type I and Type II diabetes
- Examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to managing diabetes and CVD risk
- Discuss the role of the healthcare professional in the prevention of complications
- Discuss the role and implementation of supported self care
- Analyse the implications for practice of diabetes as a cardiovascular disease
This module will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials, supported by 1 study day and 1 assessment day.
