Cardiovascular disease (CVD), and in particular coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, is the commonest cause of death in the United Kingdom . This module enables practice nurses and other health professionals to develop a sound knowledge base in the prevention and management of coronary heart disease in high risk patients. Sound knowledge is underpinned by essential practical skills, equipping candidates to participate effectively in the care of these patients.

By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of coronary heart disease (CHD)
- Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system
- Analyse the assessment, diagnosis and management process of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD)
- Examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to coronary heart disease management
- Evaluate the benefits of a systematic, multi disciplinary approach to patient centred care within the multidisciplinary team setting
- Critically examine the key issues for patients and healthcare professionals in facilitating supported self care
