CATS Points: 15
Academic Level 2 (Diploma)
Notional study time: 150 hours
Duration: 3 months

Why is Atrial Fibrillation important?

  • Risk of stroke is increased five fold in atrial fibrillation
  • A recent study calculated that in 1995, 534,000 people in the UK had atrial fibrillation and that the direct cost of healthcare for those patients was £144 million
  • The publication of Chapter 8 of the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease (DH, 2005), and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines (NICE 2006) have highlighted the importance of individualised case management in the treatment of AF.

Download Module Information...

Studying Education for Health’s Atrial Fibrillation module will enable you to effectively identify, diagnose and manage atrial fibrillation.

You will be empowered to deliver effective, safe and competent evidence based care to patients based on national guidelines.  Often undetected, atrial fibrillation doubles the risk of death in both sexes at any age as well as being a major cause of stroke.  You can make a real difference to patient’s lives by identifying patients with atrial fibrillation, effectively treating arrhythmia and reducing the risk of complications (particularly thromboembolic events such as stroke) and by supporting patients to manage their own conditions.

This module covers the following areas:

  • Epidemiology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Identification, assessment and diagnosis of atrial fibrillation
  • Management of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments
  • Organisation of care
  • Supported self care

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • Discuss the epidemiology of atrial fibrillation and its impact on healthcare resources
  • Critically evaluate the role of the healthcare professional in identifying and diagnosing atrial fibrillation
  • Examine the different approaches to the management of atrial fibrillation
  • Translate evidence and guidance into practice to make a difference to patients

This course will take 3 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials.
