Introduction to Heart Failure Care: Short Course
With an ageing population and improved care for people having heart attacks, heart failure is an increasingly common condition. There is no "cure" for the condition and it has a dramatic effect on the quality of life of people who suffer from it. If not properly managed in the community it can place very heavy pressure on hospital beds through emergency admissions and re-admissions.
Aims
This interactive one day short course is designed to provide an introduction to the assessment and optimal management of patients with heart failure in line with the NSF for CHD and the NICE guidelines. It will provide up to date basic information about the disease and its practical management.
Objectives
- To be aware of the NICE guidelines for Heart Failure
- To understand the usual causes of heart failure and be able to recognise potential sufferers
- To be aware of the optimal investigation and assessment of a patient that lead to a di agnosis
- To know the optimal treatment options
Target Audience
Health Care Professionals working with, and caring for, patients with heart failure in the community. This is likely to include Practice Nurses, District Nurses, GPs, Palliative Care Nurses and Car di ac Rehabilitation Nurses wishing to develop services in the community, Discharge Planners and Community Pharmacists
Programme
The short course will provide practical, interactive sessions covering:
- Overview of heart failure
- Causes and diagnosis
- Management of heart failure - pharmacological and non-pharmacological
Reference can be made to local guidelines.
The day will not replace the need to undertake more in-depth training for those wishing to undertake a more extensive role in patient care. It is hoped that following the day people may wish to take advantage of the validated training available.
