Essential Hypertension: Short Course
Untreated hypertension or the ‘silent killer’ as it is often known, affects approximately 40% of the adult population. If undiagnosed or left untreated it causes disability and death from stroke, heart attack and peripheral vascular disease and will eventually lead to renal failure and retinopathy. Screening, detection and management are therefore vital.
In order to correctly diagnose hypertension, accurate blood pressure measurement is essential. Decisions made from this will impact on a patients’ life forever. Blood pressure measurement is one of the most commonly performed tasks in both primary and secondary care, yet even today research shows that hypertension is poorly managed and that many more strokes and heart attacks could be prevented.
