Taking Action
Quarterly e-Newsletter - Winter 2006

With our compliments….

Welcome to this first issue of Taking Action.

Published quarterly, our e-Newsletter will focus on topical, personal and professional development related issues and we hope you find it both enjoyable and informative.  It will highlight our work, both nationally and internationally, and let you know how you can get involved.

Together we will address matters related to education, communication and leadership for truly effective organisation and delivery of care.  With your help we will include items of direct interest to health professionals and managers with responsibilities or interests in cardiovascular, allergic or respiratory disease and research.

We’re the Communications Team at Education for Health.  We don’t claim to be publishers, but in our spare time we write, design and publish this e-Newsletter.  Articles have been written by members of our own team of health education specialists and some by guest contributors too.

We’d love to hear from you…..

If you would like to discuss your education or lifelong learning plans with us we’d be happy to oblige.  Can we support you in another way?  Perhaps a colleague would like to take advantage of this free resource?

Any feedback, comments, queries and views on ‘Taking Action’ will be greatly received.

Please email our team at: Taking Action

Diary of a respiratory MSc student.  Guest writer: Bev Cox

Phew!  I've just completed the first eighteen months of the MSc in Respiratory Care.  How time flies when you're enjoying yourself.  My latest assignment was a reflective piece on how I've moved on since I started the course.  It was a 2,000 word assignment but I felt as if I could have written a book.  The work was based on my very first piece of coursework, which simply asked the question ‘Why do you want to do the MSc?’  Well, Miss, it’s to make myself a better nurse so that I can make patients better, isn’t it?  Actually it’s not as simple as that…

Transforming Lives Worldwide

Case Study: Asthma admissions in Bermuda have fallen by 73% since 1994.  What’s the secret of our success?
Guest Writer:  Liz Boden, Open Airways

Liz Boden (RN, RSCN) of Open Airways confirms “The key to our success is a well-trained team of healthcare professionals, giving excellent care and providing basic equipment such as spacers, peak flow meters and pillows with dust-mite covers free of charge.  Educating the community and having the support of sponsors who believe we really can make a difference is essential.”

Yvonne Henderson, Respiratory Physiotherapist and Education for Health’s clinical and academic Smoking Cessation Lead, says “By really understanding the issues facing smokers trying to quit can we build a partnership which initiates and supports long-term behavioural changes.  By identifying and overcoming barriers to these changes we can enable smokers to be proactive in managing their quit attempt.”
