Taking Action
Quarterly e-Newsletter -
Autumn 2008

With our compliments....

On Friday 10th October, 47 healthcare professionals graduated from Education for Health programmes in an inspirational and moving service at St Mary’s Church in Warwick; our graduates were awarded 5 Diplomas in Respiratory Care, 11 BSc (Hons) in Respiratory Care, 13 Diplomas in Chronic Disease Management, 1 PG Diploma, 1 PG Certificate, 15 MSc in Respiratory Care and 1 Honorary MSc in Respiratory Care.

Their achievement is great and we have been proud and honoured to work alongside them.  Their awards mean that they have demonstrated clear ability to understand, use and apply evidence based care to improve patients’ lives.  With extraordinary commitment, many of them have already used their new knowledge to transform workplace practice and service delivery – very visible examples of Lord Darzi’s vision of education being used as a lever for service improvement.

We believe education to be a continuum which allows and encourages us to learn from each other.  These graduates have achieved exceptional results and we will be working with them to share their work more widely over the coming months.

To discuss any of the above, or to share your ideas on how we could further improve the eNewsletter or website, please contact us:

Invitation to all involved with the prevention and early intervention of stroke

The Department of Health is currently considering what the recently published Stroke Strategy means for the workforce.  They have set up a new national Stroke Training Forum and invited Education for Health to be part of its steering group. We've also been invited to chair one of the four Task Groups: Awareness raising and information...

Launch of new electronic educational resource on the management of respiratory disease

eGuidelines.co.uk and Education for Health have launched REAL (Respiratory Education and Learning).  It will provide healthcare professionals with an interactive asthma case study, information on how respiratory drugs work, self-management plans, and links to expert articles and the latest BTS/SIGN guideline on asthma.  It also offers a route to a range of accredited educational modules from Education for Health which enables multidisciplinary teams to deliver measurable health improvements for their patients with asthma..

Development of new Cardiovascular resource to improve care for people at risk
Jo Haws, Clinical Lecturer in CVD and PCCS/CVNL Forum Member

One of the first things I’m keen to develop is a series of educational slide sets that Cardiovascular Nurse Leads may find useful in their work to improve cardiovascular care for people at risk.  To provide up to date, clinically relevant information, free to download and adapt for local delivery, I’m starting with the Stroke Strategy and invite colleagues and fellow CVNL’s to contribute...

European Lung Foundation raises awareness of lung disease for patients across Europe with new online resource

The European Lung Foundation has just published a fantastic resource for health professions and patients about air travel and oxygen.  The potential problems associated with lung diseases and air travel are well recognised.  Many lung patients are now able to safely enjoy the benefits of air travel if they plan their provisions in advance.  This new online resource details every airline across Europe, what they provide and who to contact.  Monica Fletcher, our Chief Executive is Chairman of the International Professional Advisory Committee and a member of the Council…

Putting Lord Darzi‘s vision for education into practice

47 health professionals graduated from Education for Health this year with Open University qualifications.  As graduates they share the ability to effect and manage change, and the future for their patients is bright indeed...

Locally Delivered Training – meeting the training needs of healthcare professionals

In these days of economic uncertainty not all commissioners of training are willing to support 6 month diploma or degree modules for large numbers of students, although we have good evidence to say that those who have been on our courses change and improve patient care in primary and secondary care.  As Scottish Training Coordinator, Ruth McArthur was asked to put together a programme for local nurses in the Glasgow area who already had some experience in the management of asthma and COPD.  As well as a bespoke course on Eczema, commissioned by a Lead School Nurse based at Greenwich Teaching PCT...

How can you improve adherence in your asthma patients? - By taking part in Asthma UK’s survey

Asthma UK is investigating how well healthcare professionals understand their patients’ concerns regarding side effects of steroid medication.  If you are seeing asthma patients, Asthma UK would really value your input in this survey.  This will only take 5 minutes of your time and the results will be published in a subsequent e-newsletter...

WebWatch: Walking the Way to Health – initiative aiming to encourage people to do regular walks in their communities

Walking the way to Health (WHI) is the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks.  It is a joint initiative between Natural England and the British Heart Foundation which aims to encourage people, particularly those who take little exercise, to do regular short walks in their communities. With more than 525 supported health walks on the WHI website – you can find your local ones using the fully interactive Walk Finder and further resources can be found on our website...
