Weight Management: Short Course

Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic. There are many problems related to obesity including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, cancer and diabetes, all of which have a huge impact on national resources and individuals' quality of life. Most people understand that the key is to 'eat less, do more' but the challenge to health care workers and members of the public alike is how to change this notion into reality.
As the burger giants respond to public demand by removing the healthy options from their menus and returning to 700 calorie maxi-burgers, this one day course looks at how obesity affects public health and how to influence behaviour change through individual and public health programmes.
This course was commissioned by the Army in Folkestone for Army nurses to be able to offer health advice to Army personnel and their families.
Aim of short course
The course aims to equip the attendee with the knowledge and understanding of the significance of weight management in the broader public health agenda and to enable them to influence change on an individual and community basis. It is suitable for health care professionals and health care assistants.

- Weighing up the problem - an interactive session on the implications of obesity for the individual, the family and society
- Consultation skills in weight management
- The role of diet and exercise v pills and bariatrics in weight management
- Case studies
- Review of the day.

One training day with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions.
