Spirometry for HCAs Short Course

Download Course Information...

This workshop is for healthcare support workers involved in undertaking spirometry

  • Spirometry is needed to make a firm diagnosis of COPD
  • Together with the presence of symptoms, spirometry helps stage COPD severity.  The role of the HCA in this is key.
  • Spirometry can be used to monitor disease progression,
  • but to be reliable the intervals between measurements
  • must be at least 12 months.

This one day workshop is designed to give up to date, basic information about spirometers, how they can be safely used and maintained, and how to ensure that good quality results are obtained.  This workshop is interactive and practically focused.

The role of spirometry in the accurate early diagnosis and management of COPD and other respiratory disease is firmly established. Spirometry is also becoming more frequently requested for medical examinations, e.g. for insurance and other purposes. Serial spirometry measurements also form an essential part of occupational health screening for workers in certain industries.

The use of spirometry is increasing and Health Care Assistants, within multi-disciplinary teams, are taking on the important role of recording accurate and meaningful spirometry measurements. This course aims to support this.

Attending this workshop will give you basic knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

  • Spirometry equipment
  • Technique and achieving technically acceptable results
  • Identifying common problems
  • Patient preparation
  • What a spirometer measures
  • Normal and abnormal spirometry
  • The flow/volume trace

This is a one day workshop with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions, delivered by expert practicing clinicians.
