The aim of this course is to give health professionals the practical skills that will enable them to get technically acceptable spirometry results and to develop a basic understanding of normal and abnormal spirometry patterns.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects around one in ten people over 65 years of age. Current, national COPD guidelines stress the importance of spirometry in the accurate, early diagnosis and management of this important disease.  Spirometry is becoming more frequently requested for medical examinations, e.g. for insurance and other purposes.  Serial spirometry measurements also form an essential part of occupational health screening for workers in certain industries.

This practical course is designed to give up to date, basic information about spirometers, how they should be used and how to ensure that good quality results are obtained.  Basic interpretation of the results is also included.  It is suitable for any health professional who is, or who plans to be involved in taking spirometry measurements.

Attending this course will give you basic knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:

  • Spirometry equipment
  • Technique and achieving technically acceptable results
  • Identifying common problems
  • Patient preparation
  • What a spirometer measures
