Tuberculosis Short Course

Download Course Information...

This workshop is for healthcare professionals caring for patients with Tuberculosis

  • About nine million new cases of TB, and nearly two million deaths from TB, are estimated to occur around the world every year
  • TB is the leading cause of death among curable infectious diseases
  • The World Health Organization declared TB a global emergency in 1993.

The purpose of this workshop is to give health professionals a basic understanding of TB and the practicalities of effectively indentifying, supporting and managing patients with or at risk of TB.

TB has been recognised since classical times and by the mid 1880s, most people in cities of the developed world were infected although not all developed active disease.

Social improvements, segregation of sufferers and effective medical interventions led to near eradication if TB in developed countries by the 1980s.

Immigration, poverty, loss of public health controls and management skills, drug resistance and HIV infection have contributed to the resurgence of TB.

TB is a major health problem in developing countries and of increasing importance in developed countries.  It is important that tackling TB remains a priority to prevent further spread of the disease.

Those attending this workshop will gain basic knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • What is TB?
  • At risk groups
  • Signs and symptoms
  • Diagnosis of TB
  • Treatment overview
  • Monitoring strategies
  • Contact tracing and screening
  • Prevention control measures

This is a one day workshop with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions.
