Paediatric Asthma: Short Course
(Locally delivered)

Asthma is a very common disease of childhood and currently affects about 1 in 7 children and its prevalence is increasing. Asthma symptoms can disrupt the lives of children and often causes them to limit activity and lose time from school.

Aim of short course

This one day basic course is designed as an introduction to paediatric asthma and is suitable for all healthcare professionals working with children who suffer from asthma, such as health visitors, school nurses and new practice nurses. The course will give an overview of asthma and help to identify poor control and when to refer onto another healthcare professional for management and also gives an insight into our more advanced diploma and degree level programmes.

  • Overview of asthma:
    • Epidemiology
    • Review of the development of the respiratory system
    • Patterns of the wheeze in early childhood
    • Definition
    • Signs, symptoms and triggers
  • Diagnosis:
    • History taking - interactive session
  • Assessing and managing the Acute Episode
  • Treatment:
    • BTS/SIGN Guidelines
  • Inhaler devices - a practical session
  • Rhinitis and asthma
  • Summary and evaluation.

Duration and format

One training day with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions.
