Homecare and the COPD Patient: Short Courses
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is known to affect 900,000 people in the UK . It causes progressive loss of lung function and increasing disability.
Half of all the medical admissions for respiratory disease are for COPD. Patients with severe COPD can be considerably disabled, housebound, socially isolated and dependent. They may well come under the care of community health-care teams. New initiatives from the Department of Health aimed at reducing hospital admissions and providing structured, holistic care for patients with long-term conditions will inevitably encompass the care of patients with severe COPD.
