This course is for anyone who has the opportunity to offer smoking cessation advice
- An estimated 4.8 million people died from smoking-related diseases in 2000
- In the developing world 62% of smoking-related deaths occurred among people aged 30-69 years old, compared with 49% in the developed world
- In the UK about half of all regular smokers will eventually be killed by smoking, with most dying from lung cancer, COPD and chronic heart disease
- A fifth (20%) of all deaths in the UK are related to cigarette smoking, including a third of deaths from cancer
Studying Education for Health’s Smoking Cessation module will allow you to develop your skills and knowledge and enhance you ability to offer smoking cessation services to clients.
You do not need to be a health professional to study Education for Health’s Smoking Cessation module.
This module covers the following areas:
- Understanding why people smoke
- Impact of smoking on health
- Benefits and difficulties of quitting
- The quit process
- Reducing withdrawal symptoms
- Strategies to cope with behavioural changes
- Support during the quit process
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Examine the main methods of smoking cessation and assess their effectiveness
- Critically examine principles of an effective smoking cessation strategy
- Apply smoking cessation theories and strategies to clinical practice
- Devise an appropriate smoking cessation action plan for particular circumstances
- Generate ways of facilitating change management in particular cases through reflective practice.
This course will take 4 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials.
