Suitable for

Respiratory disease is a major cause of hospital admissions for children.  This module will be of interest to hospital based nurses working within paediatrics, or respiratory nurses with a special interest in children.  Students will develop a broad understanding of the common paediatric respiratory conditions to enable them to deliver effective patient care.

Outline Content

Pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and management of:

 

  • Asthma
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Croup
  • Brochiolitis
  • Pertussis
  • Pneumonia
  • TB
  • HIV
  • Chronic lung disease of prematurity

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Define common childhood respiratory infections
  • Examine the principal issues in the diagnosis, treatment and management of paediatric respiratory disease
  • Analyse the critical issues in history-taking
  • Examine the nursing management appropriate for patients with a specified disease
  • Recommend appropriate treatment options

Module Delivery

Comprehensive study materials supported by 2 study days which include on day 2; student presentations and 1 hour written examination.

Assessment

  • 1 hour written examination (40% marks)
  • coursework 1 submitted 8 weeks into the module
    (formative for feedback)
  • coursework 2 submitted 26 weeks into the module (60% marks)
