Diabetes is a common health condition. About 1.8 million people in the UK are known to have diabetes and there are an estimated one million people in the UK who have diabetes but are not yet diagnosed. The Department of Health and the political institutions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have developed minimum standards of diabetes care that must be met in all health regions of the UK . The scope of the frameworks is broad and covers prevention, identification and management of diabetes and its complications, including rehabilitation and continuing care. This module provides health care professionals with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to provide an effective and efficient service for people with diabetes.

The subjects covered include:
- Understanding diabetes
- Classification and diagnosis
- Nutrition, lifestyle and culture
- Acute complications of diabetes
- Therapeutic options
- Oral Hypoglycaemic agents
- Insulin therapy
- Long term complications
- Foot disease
- Special people with diabetes (Life Times)
- Eye disease
- Sexual health Helping people make changes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Develop, extend and enrich your existing knowledge of diabetes and the care of people with diabetes, adapting your professional practice to all you have learnt
- Take the opportunity to explore existing attitudes and beliefs in the practice of diabetes care
- Explore and discuss the value of teamwork in diabetes care
- Recognise the importance of interpersonal and effective communication skills in relationships with people with diabetes, family members/carers and colleagues in the delivery of diabetes care
- Understand how you learn and how you apply your learning to your professional practice
- Extend your network of people working in diabetes care, to share experiences, to have fun and develop supportive relationships
- Achieve an accredited qualification in diabetes care from the University of Warwick.

This module is offered as part of the Diploma of Higher Education in Chronic Disease Management, which is a collaboration between NRTC (now Education for Health), Warwick Diabetes Care (at Warwick University) and Heartsave. The module can be studied independently or as part of the Diploma programme.
