Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects around one in ten people aged 65 and over and is one of the consequences of smoking. In all, COPD is known to affect more than 600,000 people in the UK, but the true figure is thought to be much higher. Unless urgent action is taken to reverse the trend, current estimates suggest that by 2020, COPD will be the fifth most common cause of death in the UK.
