Asthma Update Short Course

Download Course Information...

This workshop is for nurses who care for patients with Asthma in practice or in the community

  • At any one time roughly 1 in 25 adults over the age of 16 have asthma
  • 1 in 7 children aged 2-15 years of age have asthma
  • Asthma is more common and more severe in the UK than in many other parts of the world
  • Approximately 1,500 people die of asthma each year in the UK.  This number is small compared with heart disease and cancer but most asthma deaths are preventable by better management.

All health professionals working with patients who have asthma have a vital role to play in implementing the superb new evidence based guideline.

The British Thoracic Society (BTS) and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) herald an exciting new phase in the management of asthma care in the UK. The development of the guideline, using the SIGN methodology, involved a rigorous systematic process of investigation to find and apply the best clinical evidence to guide clinical decisions about asthma treatment and management.

This practical Asthma Update workshop is designed to provide health professionals with a comprehensive overview of the management of asthma.

It will cover topics such as:

  • diagnosis and management
  • devices and treatment
  • acute asthma update
  • aria guidelines and management issues
  • childhood asthma
  • asthma in pregnancy
  • occupational asthma
  • organisation of care
  • concordance and compliance
  • outcomes and audit

This is a one day workshop with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions, delivered by expert practising clinicians.
