Why is Asthma important?
- At any one time roughly 1 in 25 adults over the age of 16 have asthma
- 1 in 7 children aged 2-15 years of age have asthma
- Asthma is more common and more severe in the UK than in many other parts of the world
- Approximately 1,500 people die of asthma each year in the UK. This number is small compared with heart disease and cancer but most asthma deaths are preventable by better management.

Studying the Asthma module will enable you to confidently provide effective care to patients with Asthma.
You will develop a sound asthma knowledge base which will allow you to educate your patients and offer improved asthma management, enabling patients to cope with their disease confidently and at a level of evolvement that they are happy with.
This module covers the following areas:
- Epidemiology of asthma
- Pathophysiology
- Confirming the diagnosis
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management
- Caring for patients with asthma, including the acute attack
- Patient education and the role of health professionals
- Monitoring asthma outcomes
- Establishing an asthma service
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Critically examine the nature and incidence of asthma
- Examine pre-disposing factors for asthma
- Appraise methods of diagnosing asthma
- Assess the principal effects of asthma on a patient
- Analyse the critical issues in assessing a patient with asthma
This module will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials supported by 2 study days. (Day 2 includes a practical workshop and 1 hour unseen written exam).
