Why is Diabesity important?
- Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for developing other long-term health problems such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and some cancers.
- In the UK more than 2 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 1 million people have the disease but remain undiagnosed.
- The prevalence of diabetes is rising due to rising levels of obesity and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle

This course is for healthcare professionals who are in contact with people who are overweight or obese and at risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease

This one day course is suitable for nurses or other clinicians who would like to be able to work more effectively with overweight people at risk of diabetes.
This course will enable you to understand the link between obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease and recognise your role in preventing and treating these conditions.
The NHS Information Centre document entitled ‘Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet: England’, published in January 2008 showed that using combined categories of BMI and waist circumference to assess risk of future health problems:
- 20% of men were estimated to be at increased risk
- 13% were at high risk
- 21% at very high risk.
- 14% of women were at increased risk
- 16% were at high risk
- 23% at were at very high risk.
