This course is for experienced nurses caring for patients on Pulmonary Rehabilitation programmes

  • The goals of rehabilitation are to reduce the symptoms, disability, and handicap and to improve functional independence in people with lung disease
  • The majority of patients considered for pulmonary rehabilitation programmes will have COPD
  • The rehabilitation process incorporates a programme of physical training, disease education, nutrition assessment and advice supported by psychological, social, and behavioural interventions

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary programme of exercise and education designed specifically for people with chronic respiratory disease. With a strong evidence base to support its use, pulmonary rehabilitation is recognised as one of the most effective treatment strategies in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. With demand for the provision of this service growing, this module is designed for all health professionals currently involved in pulmonary rehabilitation or those looking to set up a service.

This course covers the following areas:

  • Introducing pulmonary rehabilitation
  • The respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • Assessment (including exercise testing)
  • Exercise and exercise prescription in COPD
  • The role of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Devising and developing a pulmonary rehabilitation programme
  • Audit

This course will give you the knowledge and skills to:

  • Evaluate the impact of COPD on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • Critically analyse the principles relating to exercise and the rationale behind exercise prescription
  • Evaluate the role of the multi-disciplinary team in improving the quality of life of patients attending pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Critically appraise the literature relating to pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Competently assess a patient, including selecting an appropriate exercise test, prior to them commencing a pulmonary rehabilitation programme
  • Devise and develop an appropriate pulmonary rehabilitation programme in accordance with current guidelines
  • Select and justify the use of suitable audit tools in pulmonary rehabilitation

This course will take 4 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive written materials
