This is a compulsory module for students on the degree programme and is normally the first module to be studied at HE Level 3.
During the course of their everyday professional lives, health professionals are increasingly required to make evidence-based diagnostic, prescribing and/or management decisions. The availability of information about healthcare has expanded rapidly over the past decade or so, and clinical research studies are continually identifying ways of providing the best possible care for patients.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically examine the principles of evidenced based medicine and healthcare
- Critically analyse the effect and significance of the hierarchy of evidence
- Examine the effect of using appropriate study design and minimising effect on outcomes
- Examine the effect of distribution of data on the selection of appropriate statistical tests
- Critically appraise the methodology and outcomes used in each of the following:
- A diagnostic study
- A therapeutic trial
- A decision and/or economic analysis
- A systematic review
- A harm study
