This course is for experienced health care professionals caring for patients with COPD in practice or in the community
- More than 900,000 people have a diagnosis of COPD but this figure is thought to be much higher with as few as 1 in 4 patients actually having their condition recognised
- Britain has one of the highest death rates from COPD in Europe
- Hospitalisations with this disease have increased 50% between 1992 and 2000
- Hospital costs in 2001-2002 amounted to £587m in the UK
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major cause of hospital admission and utilises significant health service resources in both primary and secondary care. Education for Health’s COPD degree module will enable you to confidently identify and diagnose the disease early, reducing the cost to patients and society. You will understand the use of evidence to underpin the skills and knowledge needed to instigate appropriate management strategies, so that the patient can continue to function as normally as possible within his or her usual home setting.
Until recently COPD attracted little attention and was dubbed "the Cinderella respiratory disease". However, there is now renewed interest in this condition and with the long awaited clinical strategy (formally NSF) for COPD due in spring 2009 there will be a 10 year plan to improve the care of COPD patients.
This course covers the following areas:
- COPD profile
- Clinical settings of COPD
- Basic mechanisms
- Diagnosis
- Assessment
- Treatment (drug and non-drug)
- Prevention
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate, apply and disseminate evidence based knowledge of the structural changes and clinical features in chronic asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema
- Critically analyse the significance of the prevalence, mortality and morbidity associated with COPD issuesin practice
- Assess the extent and significance of disability and handicap in COPD patients; critically evaluate the impact of COPD on patient quality of life
- Critically evaluate how structural changes in COPD lead to abnormal lung function; assess, evaluate the factors influencing the rate of lung function decline
- Analyse the mechanisms and implications of thedevelopment of cor pulmonale in COPD.
This course will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive written materials supported by 4 study days. The study days will be a mix of informal lectures and practical sessions delivered by expert practicing clinicians.
