Cardio-respiratory symptoms (including breathlessness, chest pain and cough) are the presenting symptoms of many disorders. This module explores the aetiology and impact of long-term cardio-respiratory disease. The module focuses on the role of the health professional in symptom management to improve the patient’s quality of life. It is particularly suitable for health professionals working in primary care and community settings as well as those with an interest in palliative care in either primary or secondary care.
Outline Content
This module focuses on long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms. It examines the nature and causes of breathlessness and related symptoms and provides in-depth information about the management of patients with long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms. It explores the impact of these symptoms on patients and their families and carers and examines the issues relating to the provision of care for patients with end-stage disease. The subjects covered include:
- Understanding long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms
- Assessing the impact of cardio-respiratory symptoms and formulating a management plan
- Maximising therapy
- Psychological interventions
- End of life issues
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically examine the causes and mechanisms that lead to long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms.
- Evaluate the different assessment tools available to assess the physical and psychological impact of long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms on patients, their families and carers.
- Examine the differing management strategies available for alleviating long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms
- Critically analyse the pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of managing long-term cardio-respiratory symptoms
- Critically examine the models of palliative care in the management of cardio-respiratory symptoms in end stage disease.
- Analyse the role of communication between the multi-disciplinary team, patients and carers and evaluate the impact of communication on the outcome of the differing management strategies.
- Critically analyse the impact of local and National Policy on developing services to support patients with long term cardio-respiratory symptoms.
