Suitable for

Cardio-respiratory symptoms (including breathlessness, chest pain and cough) are the presenting symptoms of many disorders.  The symptoms can have a cardiac, respiratory, metabolic or psychological origin.  Frontline health professionals need to be able to systematically assess a patient presenting with acute cardio-respiratory symptoms.  This module is particularly suitable for any health professional who has responsibility for providing the first-point-of contact for patients with acute symptoms.  It is equally relevant for primary or secondary care practitioners.

Outline Content

This module focuses on cardio-respiratory symptoms. It examines the nature and causes and provides in-depth information about assessment and diagnosis. The subjects covered include:

  • Understanding the sensation of breathlessness and associated symptoms
  • Acute and ‘acute on chronic’ symptoms
  • Assessing patients
  • Differential diagnosis
  • Appropriate emergency and ‘first Iine’ management

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Analyse the mechanisms that underlie cardio-respiratory symptoms
  • Critically examine the differing causes of these symptoms
  • Take a history from a patient presenting with cardio-respiratory symptoms
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the assessment and examination of a patient with cardio-respiratory symptoms
  • Interpret, critically analyse and evaluate the investigations appropriate for such a patient
  • Evaluate how these investigations are employed for differing situations
  • Critically analyse the process of reaching a diagnosis in cardio-respiratory disease
  • Reflect on the appropriate methods of and barriers to communicating with patients
