Why is Asthma in Focus important?
- At any one time roughly 1 in 25 adults over the age of 16 have asthma
- 1 in 7 children aged 2-15 years of age have asthma
- Asthma is more common and more severe in the UK than in many other parts of the world
- Approximately 1,500 people die of asthma each year in the UK. This number is small compared with heart disease and cancer but most asthma deaths are preventable by better management.

This asthma degree level module is designed for health professionals to develop their asthma knowledge further.
In this module asthma issues are looked at more critically and in greater depth and there is less emphasis on the practical aspects of setting up asthma services. Asthma will be related to the broader health issues that are facing both people with asthma and health professionals. It may be preferable to have had some assessed asthma education prior to embarking on this module.
This module covers the following areas:
- Epidemiology of asthma
- Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract
- Allergy and asthma
- Virus infections and asthma
- Diagnosing asthma
- Medications and delivery devices
- Asthma management
- Specific types of asthma: late-onset, hormonal, occupational, brittle, exercise-induced
- Patient education
- Public health issues
- Audit
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the prevalence and causes of asthma
- Critically examine the environmental factors in the onset of asthma
- Critically examine the link between allergy and asthma
- Critically assess the effects of asthma on the respiratory tract, including the upper airways
- Select and justify methods for diagnosing asthma in patients of different ages
This module will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive written materials supported by 3 study days. The study days will be a mix of informal lectures and practical sessions delivered by expert practising clinicians.
