CVD for Social Care Staff: Short Course
(Locally Delivered)

This course was commissioned by Leicester City Council for their Adult Social Care Team, alongside the Asthma/Breathlessness course, both of which were very successful as half day courses. A new course has been developed for Jan 2009 - providing more understanding of how they can help their clients, an overview of CVD and what the disease is, who is at risk, impact on the carers and interface with healthcare.

Aim of short course

To provide for staff working in a social care setting an overview of the most common causes of CVD, common pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods for CVD, and the impact of CVD on the individual and their families/carers.

Short course programme

  • An overview of CVD - what is it, who gets it and why?
  • The risk factors for cardiovascular disease - how can we measure 'risk'?
  • Treatment options for CVD - drug therapies and lifestyle interventions
  • Impact of CVD on the individual and their families and carers:
    • Case studies
  • Cardiovascular emergencies - how to respond (includes advice on giving GTN spray and when to dial 999)
  • Questions and answers.
