This workshop is for nurses who care for patients with COPD in practice or in the community
- More than 900,000 people have a diagnosis of COPD but this figure is thought to be much higher with as few as 1 in 4 patients actually having their condition recognised
- Britain has one of the highest death rates from COPD in Europe
- Hospitalisations with this disease have increased 50% between 1992 and 2000
- Hospital costs in 2001-2002 amounted to £587m in the UK
This one day workshop is suitable for any healthcare professional who comes into contact with COPD patients, particularly health professionals already managing other respiratory diseases such as asthma. This workshop is an introduction to and overview of COPD.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects around one in ten people aged 65 and over and is one of the consequences of smoking. In all, COPD is known to affect more than 900,000 people in the UK, but the true figure is thought to be much higher. Unless urgent action is taken to reverse the trend, current estimates suggest that by 2020, COPD will be the fifth most common cause of death in the UK.
This Education for Health workshop will give you up to date basic information about the disease and its practical management.
By attending our short course you will gain basic knowledge and practical skills and will cover the following areas:
- What is COPD?
- How is COPD diagnosed?
- How is COPD assessed?
- An overview of spirometry
- Treatment - an overview
- Management of exacerbations
- Rehabilitation
This is a one workshop with informal lectures and interactive practical sessions, delivered by practicing expert clinicians.
