This one day course provides an introduction and overview of asthma in the community setting.  It is suitable for any healthcare staff in the community caring for patients with asthma, such as School Support Workers, GP Receptionists and Nursery School employees.

5.4 million People in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma:  1.1 million children (1 in 11) and 4.3 million adults (1 in 12).  Despite a wide range of evidence based interventions, greater awareness of importance of prevention  and proliferation of evidence based guidelines, there were 1,200 deaths from asthma  in the UK in 2006 (40 were children aged 14 years and under).

If symptoms are recognised and treated appropriately, this will improve the quality of life of people with this condition.

This practical interactive course is designed to provide an introduction to asthma suitable for staff working in the community setting.  The day will cover the following topics:

  • Symptoms and impact of asthma, triggers, prevention and complimentary medicine. 
  • Rhinitis and its effect on asthma
  • Inhaler technique
  • Preventer and reliever medications
  • Acute asthma in children and adults
  • Recognising acute asthma, assessment and management
  • Important things key workers need to know

This is a one day course with informal teaching and interactive practical sessions, delivered by practicing expert clinicians.
